An individual was detained by police at the Government Buildings yesterday after displaying what the Office of the Prime Minister described as “suspicious behaviour” inside the Office of the Prime Minister, an incident that the office says was contained quickly and without disruption to services.

In a statement released today, the Office said the man entered through the main public entrance and was stopped on the ground floor by officers stationed there. Police were called to the scene, the statement said, and the individual was escorted from the premises before being referred to “the relevant authorities” for follow-up. The office added that no members of staff or members of the public were affected and that all government services at the site continued as normal.

The Office also used the statement to urge the public to verify information before drawing conclusions or sharing details about matters of public interest. That caution appears aimed at curbing speculation and misinformation, a recurrent concern when incidents occur at high-profile government sites.

While officials have not disclosed the identity of the person involved, the referral to relevant authorities indicates the matter will be dealt with outside the immediate precinct, either through police procedures or other security or health assessments. The Office did not provide further details on the man’s motive or whether any charges will be laid.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of security at government and judicial sites across Fiji. In recent months authorities have faced criticism after separate breaches and attacks — including a documented trespass into the Prime Minister’s official compound late last year and calls from ministers for beefed-up courthouse protection following an assault on a journalist — prompting fresh reviews of how public and official spaces are secured.

Officials say the quick action by ground-floor officers and police prevented any escalation. For now the Office of the Prime Minister’s account remains the primary official source, with law enforcement likely to provide further details should formal charges or an investigation follow.
