The People’s Alliance Party has issued a strong denunciation of the recent spread of fake news which endangers the safety and wellbeing of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and other national leaders. The party specifically addressed a Facebook post circulating on social media that falsely claimed the Prime Minister had been injured in a stone-throwing incident outside his office.

Party General Secretary Sila Balawa emphasized that at no point on the day in question was the Prime Minister hit by a stone, sustained injuries, or taken to the hospital. He described the allegations as completely fabricated and warned against the dangerous consequences of such misinformation, which could foster unnecessary alarm and confusion among the public.

Balawa expressed deep concern about the deliberate dissemination of false narratives, particularly as Fiji approaches an election year. He predicted an uptick in misleading information and politically motivated fabrications during this critical time.

In light of the current climate, the People’s Alliance Party is urging the public to depend solely on verified and official sources for news. They cautioned against sharing unverified reports, which can erode public trust and disrupt social stability. This highlights the increasing importance of media literacy in an era where rumors can quickly spread through social platforms.

By advocating for verified information and accountability in communications, the People’s Alliance Party is taking a proactive stance against misinformation that could adversely affect the political landscape and public perception.
