The Fijian government is actively reviewing its policies and legislation to enhance protections for the nation’s increasingly vulnerable elderly population, amidst rising cases of neglect, abuse, and health-related challenges. Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran announced that a national policy focused on safeguarding older citizens is in development, with consultations scheduled to take place across the country this month.

Kiran emphasized the necessity of this review as Fiji navigates shifting social dynamics that impact the care of its older residents. She pointed out that the prevalence of aging-related diseases has been escalating, alongside troubling reports of property theft that leave seniors particularly susceptible to harm.

During an interview, Kiran highlighted a concerning trend: a lack of awareness regarding dementia and other age-related illnesses, contributing to a growing impatience among younger generations toward older individuals. “We see poor understanding of dementia and aging diseases, and sometimes, elders are neglected,” she remarked.

The population shift towards urban centers and overseas employment has compounded these concerns, with many elderly family members left without adequate support. Kiran noted that busy nuclear families often overlook their older loved ones, exacerbating the situation.

In response to these challenges, while current legislation under the Family Law Act offers some level of protection, discussions are underway to potentially introduce a dedicated law aimed specifically at protecting the rights and well-being of older persons. Kiran stated, “We are looking at how we can better protect older persons through legislation.”

The forthcoming policy review and nationwide discussions are expected to play a pivotal role in informing future measures to ensure that Fiji’s elderly population receives the care and respect they deserve. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to addressing issues of neglect and vulnerability while fostering a more caring society for all ages.
