The Fiji Pearls netball team is calling for significant changes in the leadership of Netball Fiji after experiencing a disappointing performance at the recent Pacific AUS Sports Netball Series in Brisbane, Australia. In a letter addressed to Netball Fiji president RubyAnn Sorovaki, the Pearls outlined a series of logistical and managerial issues that marred their tournament experience.
Prior to their departure, the team faced inadequacies, highlighted by a meager $20 airport allowance. Upon arrival, the situation worsened as the Pearls encountered a lack of arranged transportation, unsatisfactory accommodation, and insufficient meal provisions. The challenges continued on the court, with the team suffering from limited warm-up time due to transportation delays before their matches.
Concerns were also raised regarding medical support, as the team lacked qualified medical staff and insurance, leading players to rely on rudimentary first aid. Financial mismanagement furthered the team’s frustrations, as players reported being promised a $250 allowance but only received $150, with the remaining amount contingent upon returning their playing kits.
“The overall experience was one of exhaustion and frustration,” the letter stated, drawing attention to the current leadership’s failure to support and nurture the team, undermining their potential. The Pearls have joined forces with 15 District Netball Presidents in a motion of no confidence against the current Netball Fiji leadership, signaling a collective demand for accountability and reform.
This sentiment is mirrored by former national netball captain and Lomaiviti Club president Vasiti Vugakoto, who has called for significant changes within the organization. Over the past months, leaders from multiple netball associations have expressed similar concerns regarding governance and the long-term sustainability of the sport in Fiji, emphasizing the need for a review and improvement of player recruitment and development processes.
