Fiji’s peacekeepers stationed in the Golan Heights as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force and the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization are reported to be safe despite recent tensions in the region. Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has reassured the public that all Fijian troops have been accounted for and that robust security measures are in effect.

This reassurance follows operations conducted by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on December 8, aimed at addressing rebel activities in the demilitarized zone. While United Nations positions were not specifically targeted, there are ongoing efforts to recover equipment that was temporarily impacted by the infiltration of rebels.

The situation has prompted the IDF to increase security in the region, with local communities actively supporting peacekeepers to foster stability. A Fijian officer has successfully returned to Camp Faour after being evacuated from Damascus, highlighting the responsiveness of the military to ensure the safety of its personnel.

Although the operational area remains tense, there is currently no immediate threat to Fiji’s peacekeepers. The Defence Ministry is diligently monitoring developments and has praised the professionalism and dedication of the troops serving in such challenging circumstances.

The resilience of Fiji’s peacekeepers and their commitment to maintaining peace demonstrates the vital role they play in international peacekeeping efforts. Their presence not only contributes to regional stability but also reflects a strong commitment to humanitarian values in the face of adversity.
