The 4th Singapore-Pacific Islands Transport Ministers Forum recently took place in Singapore, emphasizing the vital need for collaboration on transportation policy, infrastructure, and connectivity between the Pacific Islands and Singapore. The forum brought together representatives from various nations, including Fiji, which was represented by Savenaca Cavalevu, the chairman of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, and Salaseini Daunabuna, the permanent secretary for Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Centered around the theme “Navigational Global Transport in a Changing World: Opportunities and Partnerships,” the two-day event highlighted Fiji’s strategic role in addressing evolving global transport challenges, including geographical isolation and the impacts of climate change. Mr. Cavalevu’s speech underscored the importance of maintaining robust transport connectivity while transitioning to sustainable and inclusive transport systems through strengthened partnerships.

Fiji’s significant initiatives in sustainable transportation were also noted during the forum. These include the Transport Decarbonisation Implementation Strategy, supported by the New Zealand Government, and participation in international partnerships aimed at sustainable maritime practices. Notably, Fiji is actively involved in the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership and developing climate-resilient port action plans with UNESCAP.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Public Works emphasized the urgent need for targeted investment in infrastructure, safety, capability development, and digital transformation in the transport sector. This investment is crucial as Fiji faces the growing challenges of skilled personnel shortages in the transport domain.

In light of ongoing discussions surrounding climate change’s impact on Pacific island nations, the forum serves as a vital platform for fostering international cooperation and demonstrates a collective commitment to achieving sustainable development goals. The proactive stance taken by Fiji at the forum reflects its dedication to enhancing living standards and resilience in the face of global transport and environmental challenges.

This hopeful engagement at the forum suggests that Fiji, through collaboration and innovative strategies, is moving forward to ensure a sustainable transport future that benefits its communities and addresses the pressing issues of climate change effectively.
