The Department of Culture, Heritage & Arts in Fiji is in the process of developing the nation’s Cultural Statistics Framework. Lead consultants Dr. Janesh Sami and Laisiasa Corerega were appointed following the signing of their contract, during which they presented their inception report and work plan to Permanent Secretary Pita Tagicakirewa and Deputy Secretary Jone Vakamocea.
Deputy Secretary Vakamocea emphasized the significance of this framework in crafting evidence-based policies and decision-making in Fiji’s culture, heritage, and arts sector. He highlighted that this is the inaugural framework aimed specifically at assessing the economic impact of cultural activities through the establishment of cultural indicators.
A nationwide consultation is planned, which will engage key partners to illuminate the cultural sector’s contribution to the economy and entrepreneurial landscape. This initiative aligns with recent moves by other governmental departments, showing a concerted effort to enhance the recognition and preservation of Fiji’s cultural heritage and identity.
For example, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is working towards developing a policy to honor the contributions of Melanesian descendants, reflecting a broader government commitment to cultural inclusivity. Additionally, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics has been actively promoting the need for localized data and stakeholder involvement in policy formation, which echoes the goals set forth in the Cultural Statistics Framework.
Overall, this development reflects a positive trajectory for Fiji’s cultural sector, enhancing its potential to contribute significantly to the nation’s identity and economy, while fostering community involvement and engagement. The commitment to evidence-based policy suggests a brighter future for preserving cultural heritage and promoting economic sustainability through Fijian arts and culture.
