Integrity, discipline, and respect are essential qualities for effective leadership, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu emphasized during the opening of Fiji’s 2026 parliamentary session yesterday. Addressing Members of Parliament, he underscored the importance of Fiji’s multicultural diversity as a national asset that must be actively nurtured to foster unity among the populace.

Ratu Naiqama stressed that unity should be intentionally created through inclusive policies, respectful leadership, and a mutual commitment to serving the common good. He urged Members of Parliament to engage in evidence-based discussions and seek practical solutions, while warning against the dangers of personal attacks and political maneuvering that can undermine public trust.

“I urge all honourable members to approach their responsibilities with objectivity, discipline, and respect,” Ratu Naiqama stated. He acknowledged the significance of freedom in parliamentary debate, clarifying that it must be rooted in substantial evidence and sound reasoning. He pointed out that while political rhetoric might capture fleeting attention, it ultimately detracts from addressing the critical issues faced by the citizens.

Highlighting the challenges posed by global uncertainty, Ratu Naiqama reminded leaders of their critical role in providing both stability and direction. “In a world marked by economic, environmental, and geopolitical uncertainty, our citizens look to you, their leaders, for stability and vision,” he remarked.

The president concluded with a potent reminder about the continuous nature of leadership, stressing that the tone and conduct within the parliamentary house will significantly impact public confidence today and the future health of Fiji’s democracy. As Fiji navigates these complex challenges, leaders are called upon to not only unite the nation but to inspire hope and constructive action among their constituents.
