Parents throughout Fiji now have a vital online network to connect, share resources, and seek guidance, thanks to Sonia Shainaaz’s initiative. Sonia, who has dedicated her life to caring for her 10-year-old daughter, Aarna Sain, who has severe Cerebral Palsy, has established a supportive community that currently connects ten other parents of children with disabilities living in Suva, Labasa, and Kadavu.

Realizing the isolation many parents face, Sonia created this community to provide a space where families can exchange practical advice, share experiences, and offer emotional support. “Parents can feel isolated, but when you connect with others who understand, it makes a huge difference,” she noted. This online network facilitates discussions on nutrition, therapies, daily routines, and allows the donation of essential supplies like diapers and feeding equipment.

Sonia emphasizes the significance of structured routines, specialized diets, and adaptive tools to enhance the health and comfort of children with disabilities. She also encourages caregivers to prioritize their well-being. “Even a short walk, a hobby, or a moment of self-care can help parents manage the pressures of full-time caregiving,” she advised.

Moreover, Sonia believes the wider community holds an essential role in supporting these families. Simple acts, such as aiding with mobility equipment or donating necessary supplies, can significantly alleviate the burdens they face.

Looking to the future, Sonia envisions the development of dedicated daycare and therapy centers for children with severe disabilities to ensure they have safe spaces to learn, play, and interact. Beyond her caregiving duties, she is currently studying social work and aims to establish a nonprofit organization to extend structured support to families across the nation.

Sonia’s advice to other parents is straightforward yet profound: concentrate on what your child can achieve, seek assistance early, and foster connections with those on a similar path. “Children with disabilities feel joy, pain, and love just like any other child,” she expressed. With support from family, community, and peers, Sonia believes that both children and parents can flourish together, reflecting a positive outlook for families navigating the challenges of disability.
