Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu has delivered a sharp critique of the Coalition Government, labeling it “a government of chaos” as January draws to a close. His comments reflect growing frustrations with the administration’s handling of key issues.

In a passionate statement, Seruiratu pointed out that from the Prime Minister to various ministries, major decisions and policies are spiraling into confusion and controversy, resulting in contentious legal battles and institutional failures that ultimately burden taxpayers. He claimed that the government has become its own greatest adversary, accusing Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of being oblivious to the damage inflicted by ongoing leadership failures.

Seruiratu criticized the processes emanating from the Prime Minister’s office, which he asserted now frequently lead to legal and political turmoil. Central to his critique is what he termed a “legal disaster” surrounding the Commission of Inquiry (COI), which he argued has already cost millions in legal fees to taxpayers—costs that could have been avoided with more decisive action from leadership.

He highlighted the Prime Minister’s apparent inaction regarding the COI’s findings, particularly the recommendation to suspend the Chief Justice, and criticized allowing the Judicial Services Commission—chaired by the Chief Justice—to contest the COI findings in court. This, he argued, undermines the integrity and independence of the inquiry led by Justice Ashton-Lewis.

Moreover, Seruiratu raised alarms over an alleged conflict of interest involving the Solicitor-General, who was mentioned in the COI report while representing the State in settlement negotiations, raising questions about ethical governance.

Additionally, Seruiratu pointed to frequent Cabinet reshuffles as further signs of instability, whereby ministers are repositioned for political expediency rather than effective governance. He emphasized that nearly four years into its term, the government appears to be operating on a basis of improvised decision-making, warning that ongoing indecision is damaging public trust and weakening national governance.

Seruiratu’s strong remarks reflect a deepening concern about the state of leadership and governance, urging for a more stable and accountable administration moving forward.
