A flash flood warning is currently active across the entire Fiji Group as a trough of low pressure continues to bring persistent cloud and rain to the region. The weather office has indicated that the ongoing rainfall is heightening the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Residents in affected regions are being advised to stay vigilant, as river levels could rise swiftly due to the heavy rain. A specific flood warning has also been issued for all low-lying zones adjacent to and downstream of significant rivers. This includes areas such as the Nakauvadra River near Rakiraki Town, the Naseyani area along the Yaqara River, Tavua at the Nasivi River and Tavua Town Bridge, as well as the Navala River and the Toge River in Ba.
Additionally, high tide levels are expected to exacerbate flooding in coastal regions and areas near river mouths. In Lautoka, a high tide of approximately 2.02 meters is anticipated around 3:51 PM, while Suva is predicted to see a high tide of 1.84 meters at around 4:01 PM. Authorities are cautioning that floodwaters may breach river banks, leading to the inundation of roads, properties, and surrounding towns.
Moreover, flash flooding triggered by localized heavy rain could compromise drainage systems, small streams, low-water bridges, and Irish crossings, impacting roads and properties in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions during this adverse weather event.
