Social Democratic Party Leader Aseri Radrodro has expressed his dismay over an unprovoked attack on the Samabula Shiv Mandir in Suva on Friday. In his dual role as SODELPA Leader and Minister for Education, Radrodro is urging authorities to take immediate action against such criminal behavior.

The incident, which occurred Friday afternoon, involved an individual who entered the temple armed with an iron rod, causing significant damage to sacred idols, some of which are close to a century old. This act of vandalism has deeply unsettled both religious and civic communities across Fiji.

In light of this incident, Radrodro has called for all citizens, particularly parents and youths, to acknowledge and respect the rights of individuals to practice their religion freely. He articulated that the attack not only inflicts emotional pain but also hinders race relations within the country. Radrodro underscored his belief that irrational acts like this threaten the overall peace and peaceful coexistence among Fiji’s diverse communities.

Expressing additional concern, Radrodro emphasized the need for a united front against intolerance, reminding citizens of the importance of safeguarding the sanctity of all faiths. He condemned the act of sacrilege, calling upon youths and community leaders alike to foster dialogues that emphasize mutual respect and understanding among different religious groups.

This incident echoes a worrying trend of vandalism at places of worship across Fiji, such as the earlier desecration at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir, where sacred texts were also disrespected. Similar responses have arisen from various community leaders, focusing on solidarity and a renewed commitment to protect all religious sites moving forward.

The response to these troubling acts highlights a collective hope for greater understanding and unity among Fiji’s diverse populations. Community leaders continue to advocate for peace, asserting that in the face of adversity, there lies an opportunity to reinforce the values of tolerance and respect fundamental to the nation’s social fabric.
