Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reiterated that there are no drug laboratories in Fiji and has emphasized the need for increased international assistance to fortify the country’s battle against the illegal drug trade. During a meeting with visiting members of the United States Congress, Tudravu pointed out that the majority of narcotics seized in Fiji are being trafficked from other countries.

He stated, “There’s no laboratory here to manufacture drugs. A few white substances seized were experimentally made locally in very small amounts, but we do not have the experts or facilities to create these drugs. Some individuals are attempting to ‘cook’ drugs based on information they find online.”

Tudravu pointed to Fiji’s strategic location, which positions the nation as a transit point for drugs originating from Europe and South America. He confirmed that recent drug seizures in Tavua involved foreign nationals smuggling white substances into the country, though fortunately, the suspects were unarmed.

To bolster Fiji’s response to the escalating drug threat, Commissioner Tudravu has called for improved information sharing with U.S. law enforcement agencies, specialized training for police officers to enhance their skills in monitoring and countering drug trafficking, and logistical support to ensure officers are equipped with the necessary gear and technology.

This initiative reflects Fiji’s proactive stance in addressing drug trafficking challenges and underscores the importance of fostering international collaborations in law enforcement and security measures. The focus on training and resources illustrates a commitment to safeguarding the community from the detrimental effects of drug-related issues, paving the way for a safer future.
