New Year’s Eve celebrations throughout Fiji are set to be impacted by a slow-moving trough of low pressure that is currently affecting the region. This weather system is bringing with it rain, thunderstorms, and a heightened risk of flash flooding across the islands.

According to reports from the Nadi weather office, the trough, which is making its way from the west, is expected to influence local weather patterns through Thursday. Initial rain is anticipated to begin in the western areas before extending to the remainder of the group.

Concerns have been raised as some of these showers are predicted to be heavy, with the potential for thunderstorms developing later in the afternoon and evening. Authorities are on alert, noting that localized heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding in both low-lying and other flood-prone areas.

As the weather system persists, the forecast indicates that the wet conditions will continue into Thursday, with occasional heavy rainfall still on the horizon. However, there is hope that weather conditions will begin to improve from the west later in the day.

Despite the challenges posed by this inclement weather, there is an opportunity for resilience and community spirit during this festive season. The focus will be on safety and preparedness as Fijians come together to welcome the New Year, albeit under wet conditions.
