As Fiji embraces the New Year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling upon all road users to practice vigilance, caution, and responsibility. In light of the festivities, the LTA emphasizes that celebrations often lead to increased traffic and a heightened risk of accidents.

LTA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Irimaia Rokosawa, acknowledged that while the New Year should be a time of joy and unity, it can also become tragic if safety isn’t prioritized. He issued a strong warning against the increasingly popular practice of throwing water at moving vehicles—a trend that can endanger both drivers and pedestrians.

Mr. Rokosawa pointed out that throwing water can distract drivers, impair their visibility, and lead to loss of control. What might seem like innocent fun can have severe repercussions for everyone involved. He urged all drivers to adhere to speed limits, refrain from dangerous overtaking, avoid driving under the influence, and minimize distractions while on the road.

The LTA has identified speeding and drink-driving as key contributors to serious accidents during the holiday season. “No celebration is worth risking your life or the lives of others,” Mr. Rokosawa stressed, encouraging drivers to slow down, maintain focus, and ensure they are fit to drive—especially on lengthy trips or late-night journeys.

In addition, he emphasized the important role of passengers in fostering road safety. Passengers are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety and to advocate for safer driving practices among their drivers. As the New Year unfolds, the collective commitment to road safety can help ensure a joyous and secure celebration for everyone in Fiji.
