As the new year begins, Fiji’s men’s national netball team and the Fiji Pearls are back on the court, showcasing a refreshed determination to elevate their game. Head coach Jioweli Vakamoce, who is also temporarily taking on the role of interim coach for the Pearls until a new head coach is appointed in March, is fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead.
Vakamoce stated, “We’re not just preparing for tournaments; conditioning is a daily commitment for our athletes.” His emphasis on routine fitness training underpins the team’s objective to enhance their performance on the international stage. The first training camp of the year commenced with vital fitness testing, which had been delayed slightly but is now complete. These assessments are essential for evaluating player fitness after their individual training during the break, enabling the coaching staff to tailor specific training programs for each athlete.
The Fiji Pearls face a significant year ahead, with key fixtures such as the World Cup qualifiers and the All-Sports Series. Securing a place in the World Cup is a top priority, and the team is gearing up to confront this challenge head-first. Meanwhile, the men’s team is preparing for their second international invitational tournament after a successful debut last year. An overseas tour to Singapore is also planned, aimed at providing valuable exposure and experience to the players.
Vakamoce reinforced the critical role of consistent conditioning in achieving the teams’ goals this season. “Fitness and training must continue beyond tournaments and throughout the year. It’s about maintaining and improving every day,” he emphasized.
With a clear strategy and robust leadership, Fiji’s netball teams are poised to raise their profile and improve their standing in the international netball arena in 2024. The journey toward greater success has commenced, and the nation is poised to support them as they strive for excellence.
