After a two-year hiatus, the eagerly awaited Netball Inter-District Competition is set to make a comeback. Ma’ake Tabua, Chef-de-Mission of the Suva Netball Association, announced that the initiative involves 17 netball associations that had previously lost ties with Netball Fiji. This revamped event is expected to reignite the passion for the sport across the district. While Nasinu and Nadroga have received invitations to participate, their involvement is not yet confirmed.

Sponsorship plays a crucial role in bringing this event back to life, with New World as the primary sponsor and additional financial support from Goodman Fielder and Ashabhai. The Suva netball contingency alone will contribute significantly, fielding 17 teams. These include four teams each in the Under 15 and Under 18 categories, two in the Open grade, two in the Open Men’s division, and four in the Under 23 Men’s grade.

The event, known as the “Battle of the Netters,” is scheduled for September 26 and 27. Tabua stressed the primary goal of the competition as skill enhancement for young players and fostering their love for the sport.

This resurgence in netball activity is a positive sign for the development of the sport in Fiji. The competition will not only enhance local talent but also build a stronger netball community. The inclusion of young players indicates a strategic focus on nurturing the next generation of netball stars. By bringing competitive netball back to the district level, organizers hope to inspire increased participation at all levels and rekindle interest in netball as a sport of choice in Fiji. This inclusive approach ensures that netball thrives from the grassroots to more elite levels, creating a robust pipeline of talent for future national representation.
