Fiji’s Navy Commander, Commodore Timoci Natuva, recently represented his country at the International Fleet Review (IFR) in Visakhapatnam, India, coinciding with preparations for the upcoming Milan 2026 event. The IFR was anchored in the theme “United Through Ocean,” while Milan 2026 focused on “Camaraderie, Cooperation, Collaboration,” both emphasizing the importance of global maritime partnerships.

These events provided a platform for professional engagement, operational drills, and cultural exchanges among naval forces. Participants had the unique opportunity to enhance their skills through various activities, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEE) and the International Maritime Seminar (IMS). These forums facilitated discussions on collective maritime challenges while fostering an environment of collaboration.

Young naval officers benefitted from cross-deck visits, ship-handling simulator training, and advanced damage control exercises. Notably, demonstrations included submarine rescue capabilities showcased by a Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV). This training is essential for strengthening the collective ability of maritime forces to respond effectively to emerging threats at sea.

During the sea phase of the IFR, participants engaged in a range of operational drills, featuring carrier operations, anti-submarine warfare tactics, and air defense maneuvers, which were conducted in multinational teams. Commodore Natuva, among leaders from 74 nations, participated as a panel speaker at the Maritime Seminar, where he addressed critical issues such as illegal maritime activities, drug trafficking, and the effects of climate change on Pacific Island nations.

His engagements with senior officials from allied navies, including the Indian Navy, United States Pacific Fleet, and others, underscored Fiji’s commitment to maintaining strong maritime partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. These collaborations are vital as Fiji continues to assert its role as a reliable maritime partner dedicated to ensuring a safe and sustainable ocean environment.

The event also celebrated maritime heritage through cultural and recreational activities, including sports competitions and a vibrant International City Parade, symbolizing the unifying spirit of collaboration among nations. Fiji’s involvement in these significant naval events reiterates its dedication to safeguarding its maritime domain while reinforcing global partnerships committed to ocean security and resilience.
