Fiji National University (FNU) Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba has announced that the university’s transition to operate under the Office of the Prime Minister within the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics was initiated at the university’s request. In a weekly message to FNU staff and students, Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasized that this change was not imposed upon the university but was the result of thoughtful planning and considerations for its evolving role.

She specifically stated, “I would like to clearly state that this move was requested by the University. Our first formal discussion on this reassignment took place on August 10, 2024. This is not a takeover. It is a considered request made by FNU after careful thought and planning.” The shift from the Ministry of Education to the Office of the Prime Minister indicates FNU’s expanding national responsibilities and aims to align with its growing role within the country.

In expressing gratitude, Professor Nabobo-Baba thanked Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Ministry of Strategic Planning for their support in facilitating this transition. “We are thankful to the Honourable Prime Minister and the Ministry for working closely with us to make this transition possible,” she remarked. She also recognized the contributions of the FNU Council, its chair, deputy chair, and members throughout this process.

The transition signifies a significant moment for FNU, aiming to enhance the university’s capabilities and presence as it takes on an increasingly important role in national development.
