A vibrant celebration took place on Wednesday as 11 students from various age groups were awarded certificates at the conclusion of the second Kathak workshop held at the Fiji Museum. This initiative, organized by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) under the High Commission of India, is part of a series of school holiday programs designed to foster appreciation for Indian classical dance and culture within Fiji.

SVCC director Nishi Bala highlighted the program’s inclusive spirit, noting the impressive diversity among participants. “The students came from different age groups, but what they shared was the same dedication, discipline, and enthusiasm,” Ms. Bala remarked. She emphasized that the certificates recognized not only the acquisition of dance steps but also a deeper understanding of Kathak’s rhythms, expressions, and storytelling traditions.

The Fiji Museum, described by Ms. Bala as a cultural heritage space, serves an important role in preserving and transmitting cultural traditions to future generations. In this context, she extended her gratitude to India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Shri Suneet Mehta, for his support, as well as to Fiji Museum CEO Armando Lowe and his team for their collaboration.

Mr. Lowe reaffirmed the mission of the museum to represent and respect all communities in Fiji. “We are a museum for everyone. It is important that people of all ages understand the complex cultural makeup of Fiji, including the heritage of Fijian Indians, in a way that is engaging and meaningful,” he stated.

The workshop was skillfully conducted by Abhijit Chakraborty, a seasoned Kathak teacher and performer with over two decades of experience in the art form. This program not only celebrates the rich traditions of Indian classical dance but also strengthens cultural ties and understanding within the vibrant tapestry of Fijian society.
