Acting Prime Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has defended the decision to transfer the Fiji National University (FNU) from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics. In a statement, Mr. Vosarogo emphasized that the Prime Minister, as the head of government and chair of Cabinet, possesses the constitutional authority to delegate ministerial responsibilities and adjust governmental functions.

Mr. Vosarogo explained that under the Constitution, the Prime Minister has the prerogative to appoint ministers and allocate responsibilities as deemed appropriate. He reinforced the importance of this decision, stating that it aligns with the government’s strategic vision. The Prime Minister’s intention behind the reassignment is to ensure that FNU plays a significant role in meeting national priorities related to workforce development, migration concerns, and economic challenges.

The reassignment follows a formal notification to the FNU Council dated January 16, 2026, aimed at integrating the university’s operations with a comprehensive government planning strategy. FNU is notable as the only university in Fiji and the region that serves as a dual-sector institution, offering both higher education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Mr. Vosarogo emphasized the need to fully utilize this unique aspect of the university.

He expressed the belief that placing FNU under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Strategic Planning would enhance its effectiveness in contributing to national policies and objectives. Mr. Vosarogo mentioned that legislative changes will be necessary to solidify this reassignment and that these changes will be presented to Cabinet upon the Prime Minister’s return. He highlighted the timing of this transition, noting that many members of the FNU Council are set to have their terms expire in February 2026.

By facilitating this shift, the government aims to leverage FNU as a strategic asset that aligns closely with national planning initiatives, ultimately benefiting the country’s development trajectory.
