Fiji’s athletic community is mourning the loss of Joseph Rodan Junior, a beloved national and international athlete, who passed away after a brave struggle with illness. Rodan Junior’s legacy in athletics is both significant and inspiring, impacting many athletes in Fiji and beyond.

Throughout his career, Rodan Junior represented Fiji at two Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002 and participated in numerous South Pacific Games, Mini Games, Oceania Championships, and Australian Championships. His athletic prowess was evident early on when he made history as the youngest male decathlete to win gold at the South Pacific Games at just 17 years old. He was a formidable competitor, securing three gold medals in the decathlon throughout his career.

Rodan Junior set numerous records, including national highs in the pole vault and hurdles, and he was awarded collegiate scholarships to compete in the United States. Notably, he still holds the Oceania Area Indoor record for the 50m hurdles. His accolades also include gold medals in the Decathlon at the South Pacific Games in 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2003, as well as a gold in the 110m hurdles at the Oceania Championships in 2000.

Off the track, Rodan Junior was dedicated to nurturing the sport of athletics in Fiji and throughout Oceania, embodying the spirit of a true leader and advocate. His contributions to athletics will be remembered fondly as he inspired countless athletes to pursue their dreams. His legacy will continue to motivate future generations in the realm of sports.
