Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep sorrow over the death of iconic Fijian musician George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso, who has left a remarkable mark on both the local and international music scene. Rabuka referred to Veikoso as a “true son of the soil,” highlighting his pivotal role in elevating Fiji’s cultural presence globally through his music.

In his tribute shared on social media, Rabuka acknowledged the public’s calls for a state funeral, noting that current national protocol allows only the president to have one. Despite this, he emphasized that the lack of a state funeral does not diminish Veikoso’s monumental contributions to Fijian culture and identity, stating, “His legacy lives on in the hearts of our people.”

Veikoso, hailing from Buretu in Tailevu, achieved international fame with hit songs such as “Sweet Darlin’,” “Nau,” and “Morning Ride.” He was even nominated for a Grammy for his contributions on the “Island Warriors” album, making him one of the most recognized figures in Pacific music. His last Homecoming Concert in 2023 was a testament to his enduring popularity and the joy he brought to audiences. He was set to return for another performance this year, which now holds poignant significance in light of his passing.

Close friend and fellow musician, Laisa Vulakoro, shared her heartfelt condolences, reflecting on the communal grief that has engulfed the Pacific. She echoed the sentiment that a state funeral would be a rightful honor for Veikoso, as his musical journey has always celebrated Fijian identity and cultural pride.

The outpouring of love for Veikoso extends beyond his music, as leaders and fans alike underscore his role as an ambassador for Fiji. From the accolades he received to the connections he fostered through his work, Veikoso’s impact was profound and broad-reaching.

Although the country mourns the loss of this musical figure, his legacy lives on in the rich cultural tapestry of Fiji. His contributions will surely inspire future artists, reminding us of the powerful role music plays in uniting people across generations.

The community is hopeful that while George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso may no longer be with us, his spirit will continue to uplift and inspire, fostering unity and joy through his timeless music.
