The tragic story of six-month-old Samisoni Vana, who passed away in December, has led his mother, Sainiana Rokolewasau, to advocate for significant improvements in healthcare services across the islands of Fiji. In an emotional appeal to the Ministry of Health, Rokolewasau is urging a critical review of the standards at health centers to prevent future tragedies.
On December 22, Rokolewasau took her son to the Qarani Health Centre after he began experiencing diarrhea. To their dismay, they were informed that the facility was closed due to a lack of water supply and were sent back home. Concerned by her son’s deteriorating condition, the family returned to the health center later that evening. Upon arrival, she noted that the medical response was sluggish and that healthcare staff struggled with outdated medical equipment.
Rokolewasau emphasized that no parent should have to face the pain of losing a child due to preventable healthcare failures. After the incident, she and her family met with representatives from the Ministry of Health, who listened to their grievances and promised to address the issues raised. Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, stated that if it is determined that a healthcare professional acted irresponsibly, they will face appropriate disciplinary measures, including the potential for termination.
Driven not by anger but by a heartfelt desire for accountability, Rokolewasau is calling on the Ministry of Health to view her son’s death as a catalyst for change. She insists that resources must be allocated to improve rural and maritime healthcare services, ensuring that health centers across the nation are well-equipped and that medical professionals receive ample support.
By advocating for these necessary changes, Rokolewasau hopes to prevent other families from experiencing similar heartache and to foster a healthier future for all residents of Fiji’s islands.
