The Fijian government is actively engaging communities, traditional leaders, and faith organizations in a comprehensive response to the country’s worsening drug crisis. Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua emphasized that a multifaceted approach is necessary, as enforcement alone cannot effectively combat the rising threat of illicit drugs.

Naivalurua stated, “Government is advancing a whole-of-nation approach, which mobilizes not only enforcement agencies but also communities, traditional leadership, faith institutions, civil society, and the private sector.” This collaborative strategy comes in response to the alarming social and health ramifications stemming from drug use, particularly the rise in HIV infections linked to methamphetamine.

He highlighted the pivotal role that traditional and faith-based organizations play in prevention efforts and public awareness campaigns. “The involvement of the vanua and faith-based organisations is particularly important in strengthening national awareness, prevention efforts, and community vigilance,” Naivalurua explained. These partnerships are essential in promoting understanding about the grave social and health issues associated with drug use, including increasing HIV cases tied to methamphetamine.

The government’s comprehensive strategy expands the battle against drugs beyond mere policing to encompass education, community engagement, and rehabilitation support. “This broader mobilization recognizes that the fight against drugs must occur not only through enforcement, but also through prevention, education, and rehabilitation,” he added.

This initiative marks a positive step toward uniting various sectors of society in tackling the drug crisis, fostering a greater sense of community responsibility, and promoting healthier lifestyles in Fiji. By addressing prevention and education, the government hopes to create lasting change and support those affected by drug use.
