A 56-year-old man is set to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today due to his involvement in a social media post made in May this year. According to a statement from the Fiji Police, the man is accused of sharing an edited newspaper article on his social media platform that allegedly contained false and misleading information about two prominent individuals, believed to be political figures.

The investigation arose under Section 24 of the Online Safety Act 2018, which addresses the issue of causing harm through electronic communication. Following an investigation, the suspect was apprehended in Nadi yesterday and now faces charges for one count of Causing Harm by Posting Electronic Communication, as stipulated in Section 24(1)(a), (b), and (c) of the Online Safety Act.

This incident underscores the serious implications of disseminating false information, particularly in a politically sensitive context. Authorities are taking steps to uphold online safety, highlighting the importance of responsible communication in the digital age. As the case unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the potential legal consequences of misleading online activity.
