A 56-year-old man is set to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today following allegations related to a social media post made earlier this year. The police claim that the individual circulated a digitally altered article on his social media platform back in May, which included false and misleading information targeting two well-known figures.
This case is being examined under Section 24 of the Online Safety Act 2018, which addresses the issue of causing harm through electronic means. The man was apprehended in Nadi yesterday and faces one count of Causing Harm by Posting Electronic Communication as specified under Section 24(1)(a), (b), and (c) of the Act.
As legal proceedings begin, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges and implications of misinformation in the digital space, underscoring the importance of responsible social media usage.
