Fiji Link flights to Labasa are currently operating under a new weight restriction imposed by Fiji Airports Limited (FAL) at Waiqele Airport. This restriction, which limits aircraft weight to 19 tons, has been put in place due to concerns regarding the deteriorating runway surface. Consequently, Fiji Airways, the parent company of Fiji Link, has reported a significant reduction of up to 45% in available seating for its ATR72 services to and from Labasa.

The airline has expressed that these operational changes will unfortunately affect their capacity to meet the demands of both passengers and cargo. They have reached out with concerns to Fiji Airports Limited and the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji, emphasizing their commitment to work together for a remediation plan that would allow normal operations to resume in the near future.

Fiji Link has reassured its customers that it remains compliant with all regulatory and safety requirements and has expressed heartfelt apologies for any inconvenience this situation may cause. They are actively working to minimize disruptions while maintaining safe and reliable service.

This situation echoes a similar incident earlier when Fiji Airports had to temporarily close Labasa Airport for urgent repairs after a pothole was found on the runway. The CEO of Fiji Airports highlighted then that passenger safety is the first priority and emphasized the rapid mobilization of specialists to remedy issues as they arise. Such proactive measures underline the commitment to ensuring safe travel environments, even in the face of sudden challenges.

While the current limitations on flights may cause some immediate disruption, they are ultimately part of an essential process to ensure the long-term safety and efficiency of airport operations in Fiji, which can contribute positively to the travel experiences and economic stability of the region.
