The Fijian government is set to enhance connectivity in underserved areas through the rollout of the Universal Service Scheme (USS) in collaboration with Starlink’s low earth orbit (LEO) technology. This initiative aims to address the connectivity gaps identified in 240 areas across the nation, with the first phase focusing on deploying services to 126 specific locations.

During a recent Parliament session, Minister for Trade and Communications Manoa Kamikamica announced successful live demonstrations of the satellite solution across various terrains in Fiji. The prioritized areas for deployment were selected based on criteria that include remoteness, population density, income levels, and the need for disaster resilience.

The distribution of the 126 initial sites will include 36 each in Kadavu and Lau, 15 in Lomaiviti, 13 in Namosi, two in Navosa, and 24 in Tailevu. This careful selection emphasizes the government’s intent to make a transformative impact in regions where connectivity is most limited.

One of the most significant advantages of introducing Starlink technology is its cost-effectiveness. The government noted that the move to satellite-based systems significantly reduces the implementation costs, lowering it from over $400,000 per terrestrial tower to around $29,000 per site. This financial efficiency will facilitate wider coverage for the 240 designated communities under phase one of the program.

Each site will be equipped with at least two Wi-Fi access points, solar-powered systems for areas off the grid, emergency satellite phones for disaster situations, and a voucher-based access model to promote responsible internet usage. The systems are designed to be energy-efficient, modular, and versatile, allowing for updates without needing to overhaul existing infrastructure.

Kamikamica emphasized that the deployment is a collaborative effort involving the Telecommunications Authority, the iTaukei Affairs Ministry, and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive approach to enhancing connectivity.

This strategic initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to improve access to digital services throughout Fiji, reflecting a commitment to promote socio-economic opportunities and connect remote communities to essential services, education, and information. As the government progresses on this front, it fosters a hopeful outlook for a digitally inclusive future, especially in rural and underserved regions.
