At the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Solutions Forum held in Nadi, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu, underscored the critical need for access to safe and nutritious food. He shared Fiji’s progress in enhancing food safety through significant legislation, including the Food Safety Act of 2003, the 2009 Food Safety Regulations, and the establishment of a National Taskforce on Food Safety in 2023.

This newly formed taskforce aims to foster collaboration across various sectors and enhance the enforcement of food standards, which ultimately assists consumers in making healthier food choices. Dr. Lalabalavu pointed out that these initiatives are vital in improving public health outcomes and minimizing the occurrence of foodborne illnesses.

He also urged neighboring Pacific nations to implement similar measures to safeguard their populations, indicating a positive step towards regional health and safety improvements.
