Fiji recently hosted the Pacific Regional Workshop on the Enhanced Transparency Framework and Peer-to-Peer Learning, a significant event aimed at enhancing climate transparency among Pacific Island nations. The workshop took place from May 20 to 23 in Nadi and was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, together with various partners including the UN Environment Programme and the Global Green Growth Institute.
Over the four days, participants engaged in specialized training focusing on greenhouse gas inventory methodologies and the preparation of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) tailored specifically for the unique challenges faced by Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The objective was to strengthen national reporting capacities under the Paris Agreement.
Fiji’s experience was spotlighted, particularly on the final day, where the nation shared insights gained from its Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) Project. This initiative aims to enhance institutional arrangements in line with Fiji’s Climate Change Act 2021, which significantly supports improved climate data reporting and collaboration among various governmental agencies.
Opening the workshop, Ms. Senivasa Waqairamasi, the Director of Climate Change, emphasized the importance of the Enhanced Transparency Framework, stating that it embodies the region’s commitment to proactive climate action despite the Pacific’s minimal contribution to global emissions.
This workshop not only featured training but also served as a valuable platform for peer-to-peer learning, fostering collaboration among stakeholders and strengthening the regional solidarity needed to confront global climate challenges.
The workshop reflects a broader trend among Pacific nations, similar to other recent initiatives aimed at improving climate policies and transparency, as noted in previous workshops and reports. Located at the intersection of local and international initiatives, Fiji is positioning itself as a leader in climate resilience efforts, with a hopeful outlook for future collaborative actions to effectively address and mitigate climate impacts.
Fiji’s ongoing commitment to transparency and environmental action sets a positive precedent for other nations, reinforcing that united, informed efforts can lead to sustainable solutions in the face of climate change challenges.
