Fiji Lauded for Excellent Policy Framework Fostering Women’s Empowerment
Fiji is being hailed for its exemplary policy framework aimed at empowering women, making it a paragon in the Pacific region – says Fiji First MP, Lenora Qereqeretabua.
The Potent Women Empowerment Legislation in Fiji
Fiji First MP – Lenora Qereqeretabua, in a session in Parliament, applauded Fiji’s policy framework that she believes to be one of the finest in the region. She emphasized her commendations on the enactment of the Domestic Violence Act and Child Welfare Act. Her reason being, the laws have been influential in promoting and protecting the rights of women and children, which builds a conducive environment for their empowerment.
The Domestic Violence Act, according to her, is a ground-breaking piece of legislation, empowering women in the face of domestic abuse by protecting their rights and ensuring justice served for the victims.
Fiji’s Progress in Gender Equality
The Fiji First MP made it known that the Fijian Government has made significant strides in terms of gender equality, standing as an example for other governments to follow. The Fijian Government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment is evidenced in the establishment of the National Gender Policy in 2014, which affirms commitment to promoting gender equality, advocating for fairness, and promising redress where inequality exists.
Further underlining the Fiji government’s commitment, is the presence of the Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation. With its robust commitment, the ministry keeps focusing on the empowerment of women and providing them access to opportunities and resources, fostering an environment for equality.
Future Plans for Women Empowerment in Fiji
While the Fijian government continues to play its part, various stakeholders are also called upon to support empowering women. This united initiative can bring about a more impactful effect, cultivating an environment wherein women can flourish without restrictions.
As the Fijian government continues to foster women’s empowerment, major plans involve further strengthening the current policies. Additionally, work is underway in reviewing other acts and frameworks that will further protect women’s rights, promote their welfare, and enable more Fijian women to become active participants in nation-building. The aim being, creating a Fijian society that is balanced, inclusive, and allows everyone to reach their full potential.
