The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced that it has received an audited report concerning Walesi from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication Manoa Kamikamica. This report has been logged into FICAC’s Case Management System, which prioritizes all complaints and referrals, ensuring that the investigation will adhere to established processes and procedures.
The report includes two key components: a Technical Assessment regarding Fiji’s Digital Television Transmission Setup and a Special Audit focused on Walesi’s Financial Management and Governance. Notably, the Special Audit Report from the Office of the Auditor General revealed that the government allocated a significant amount of $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project and the operations of Walesi PTE LTD between 2015 and 2022.
Commissioner Barbara Malimali has formed a special task force for the investigation, indicating the importance of this case to the nation. This matter was highlighted in Kamikamica’s Ministerial Statement to Parliament concerning the Walesi Technical and Financial Investigation. The task force will be led by Assistant Manager of the Economic Crimes Unit, Alifereti Wakanivesi, and the investigation is set to commence immediately.
This proactive approach by FICAC underscores the commitment to accountability and transparency within the government, particularly regarding significant financial undertakings. The formation of a specialized task force shows a determination to thoroughly investigate and address any potential issues related to public funds, a move that could strengthen public trust in governmental operations.
Overall, the initiation of this investigation exemplifies the ongoing effort to uphold integrity within Fiji’s governance, which is a hopeful sign for the future. By ensuring accountability, authorities can work towards providing better services and maintaining the citizens’ confidence in governmental projects.
