Health Ministry inspectors have issued 27 abatement notices in maritime areas as part of “Operation Summer Schools Launch Against Mosquitoes.” This initiative is a response to violations of the Public Health Act and aims to enhance health standards within educational institutions.
The operation falls under the Environmental Health Unit’s initiative targeting Long-term Transmissible Diseases (LTDD) and is particularly focused on areas in Ovalau and across Fiji. During this effort, 16 Heads of Schools participated in discussions regarding structural and environmental improvements that could positively impact the long-term health of students.
Inspectors undertook spatial spraying in three secondary schools and 13 primary schools, as well as in staff quarters. Additionally, they conducted comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) assessments, project scoping, and priority mapping at all sites visited. Larval surveillance was also conducted in 16 school zones to monitor and mitigate mosquito populations.
The Ministry is in the process of gathering evidence for formal identification of infringements and is preparing for potential legal action. The team is aiming to finish their operations in Ovalau by the end of next week, after which they plan to address identified high-risk communities.
The overarching goal of this initiative is to establish a successful proof of concept in Ovalau, which could later serve as a model for LTDD interventions in other subdivisions throughout Fiji. Such proactive measures reflect a commitment to safeguarding public health and the well-being of future generations.
