Investigations are set to commence regarding a recent maritime incident involving a fiberglass boat that was transporting passengers in Ono-i-Lau last week. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has announced that it will also scrutinize the operations of Goundar Shipping Limited’s Lomaiviti Princess XII (LP XII) ship in connection with the incident.

The fiberglass boat allegedly capsized while taking passengers to the LP XII amid rough sea conditions on Thursday, January 15. The authority will investigate the loading activities that took place during the adverse weather, as these practices may have contributed to the incident.

The investigations will follow the established maritime safety regulations and procedures to ensure a thorough review. The Maritime Safety Authority has emphasized the importance of monitoring weather conditions before embarking on voyages, urging vessel operators and the public to remain vigilant about safety advisories. Continuing operations during unsafe weather can pose a grave risk to lives at sea.

The authority reaffirms its dedication to enhancing maritime safety through regulatory measures, collaboration with shipping operators, and the ongoing improvement of safety standards within Fiji’s maritime sector. This commitment aims to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of all those who travel by sea.
