Fiji is making significant strides in its role as a leader in global planetary health with the recent launch of the Oceania Planetary Health Forum (OPHF) website. This platform is set to be the cornerstone for regional initiatives tackling climate and environmental health challenges.
The website was inaugurated by Dr. Berlin Kafoa, the Director of Public Health at the Pacific Community (SPC), underscoring Fiji’s recognition as the Global Planetary Health Hub for Oceania. This acknowledgment was established earlier this year through the Pacific Planetary Health Research Centre (PPHRC), which has already been responsible for pivotal projects such as WISH and RISE. The PPHRC has received official endorsement from the Planetary Health Alliance, further solidifying Fiji’s central role in enhancing resilience throughout the Pacific.
The OPHF website aims to assist researchers, policymakers, and community leaders by sharing localized knowledge, promoting ongoing initiatives, and pushing forward the 2025 OPHF Call to Action. A key aspect of this initiative is its commitment to integrating Indigenous and local knowledge systems to foster culturally relevant solutions.
Professor Aaron Jenkins, the OPHF Committee Chair, emphasized the urgency of this project: “Our islands are on the front lines of the global ecological crisis. The OPHF website is more than just a resource; it is a shared canoe for our region to paddle in unison.” He noted the importance of transitioning from disjointed efforts to a cohesive movement focused on the well-being of people, land, and oceans.
The Oceania Planetary Health Forum aims to unite experts across health, environmental science, education, and governance to promote equitable and sustainable development in the region. This collaborative approach signifies a hopeful future for enhanced communication and shared strategies to combat pressing ecological challenges, reinforcing the importance of collective action in safeguarding the health of both the planet and its inhabitants.
