The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, has launched a Tax Compliance Taskforce aimed at curbing tax evasion and avoidance while reinforcing tax compliance in the nation. The Taskforce is chaired by Nitin Gandhi, an esteemed Chartered Accountant, and focuses on improving revenue collection through collaborative and strict enforcement measures alongside relevant agencies and businesses.
The initiatives of the Taskforce include a comprehensive review of existing tax legislation, the development of new frameworks for investigating financial non-compliance, and working closely with key entities to combat tax evasion and other financial crimes. They will employ data-driven methods to guide investigations and ensure that proper legal compliance is upheld while maintaining strict confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
Joining Gandhi on the Taskforce are prominent figures such as Jitoko Tikolevu, the former CEO of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority; Rusiate Tudravu, a previous acting Commissioner of Police; anti-corruption advocate Avaneesh Anand Raman; and risk and financial management expert Pramesh Sharma. The Taskforce is initially appointed for a 12-month period and aims to enhance the accuracy of tax collection processes within the FRCS.
Udit Singh, the CEO of FRCS, highlighted that the Taskforce will collaborate with existing structures, including the Commissioner of Tax and international partners from Australia and New Zealand, rather than replacing them. There are plans for the Taskforce to establish a clear operational framework and guidelines, along with a memorandum of understanding with numerous enforcement agencies in the near future.
This initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening Fiji’s tax compliance landscape. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders and employing a dedicated approach to enforcement, the Tax Compliance Taskforce aims to bolster the integrity of Fiji’s tax system, ultimately benefiting the country’s economy and public services.
In conclusion, this effort not only seeks to enhance revenue but also promotes fairness in tax responsibilities, benefiting all citizens. As the Taskforce begins its work, there is hope that it will pave the way for a more transparent and accountable fiscal system in Fiji.
