The government is intensifying its efforts to tackle the rising concerns regarding drug use and trafficking in schools, placing an emphasis on early and lasting interventions. Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua and Education Minister Aseri Radrodro have come together to underline the importance of robust school-based advocacy aimed at safeguarding students.

Their discussions covered a range of initiatives, including the identification of “red-zone” schools, which will receive focused interventions, and enhancing the involvement of the Fiji Police Force in educational awareness programs. They also plan to revive the Domonivuli initiative, a program designed to educate youth about the dangers of drugs, while expanding anti-drug messaging through radio campaigns and billboards.

Concerns have been raised about the increasing involvement of students in both drug selling and the use of drugs for performance enhancement in sports and for recreational purposes. In light of these issues, school principals have been urged to take proactive roles, especially in government schools, which are seen as models for setting standards in drug awareness.

Additionally, proposals have been put forth to review the existing curriculum, bolster counselling programs, and improve monitoring of existing initiatives aimed at preventing drug use among students. Both ministers have committed to a comprehensive approach across government sectors to guide young people away from drugs and enhance their overall wellbeing nationwide.

This collective strategy reflects a hopeful step towards creating a safer and healthier environment for students, ensuring they have the support necessary to thrive without the threat of drug misuse.
