The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced that it received the audited report on Walesi from Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication. FICAC confirmed that the report has been entered into its Case Management System and emphasized its commitment to handling the matter with priority while adhering to established procedures.

The report consists of two parts: a Technical Assessment of Fiji’s Digital Television Transmission System and a Special Audit focusing on the financial management of Walesi. Commissioner Barbara Malimali has formed a special task force to investigate, especially in light of the Special Audit Report from the Office of the Auditor General, which revealed that the government allocated a total of $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television Project and Walesi PTE LTD operations between 2015 and 2022.

This investigation is recognized as a matter of national interest and was discussed during Kamikamica’s Ministerial Statement regarding the Walesi inquiry in Parliament. Malimali has tasked Assistant Manager of the Economic Crimes Unit, Alifereti Wakanivesi, with leading the investigation, which is set to commence immediately.

This development reflects a strong commitment to accountability and transparency in government operations, showcasing FICAC’s dedication to investigating potential discrepancies within significant public projects. Such steps are vital for maintaining public trust in governmental processes and ensuring that public funds are managed responsibly.
