The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has officially acknowledged the receipt of an audited report concerning Walesi, submitted this morning by Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication. FICAC indicated that the report has been recorded in its Case Management System and will be addressed with high priority, adhering to the Commission’s established protocols and due processes.
The report is divided into two key sections: a Technical Assessment of Fiji’s Digital Television Transmission Setup, and a Special Audit focusing on the financial management of Walesi. FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali has appointed a dedicated task force to investigate the findings, especially since the Special Audit Report from the Office of the Auditor General highlighted that the Government allocated a substantial total of $123.6 million for the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project and the operations of Walesi PTE LTD from 2015 to 2022.
This matter, characterized as one of national interest, was also brought to the attention of Parliament during Kamikamica’s Ministerial Statement regarding the Walesi Technical and Financial Investigation. Commissioner Malimali has instructed the special task force, headed by Alifereti Wakanivesi, the Assistant Manager of the Investigation – Economic Crimes Unit, to initiate the investigation immediately.
This situation highlights the commitment of FICAC to transparency and accountability in government projects. The formation of a special task force signals a proactive approach in addressing potential financial discrepancies, aiming to safeguard public interests and ensure responsible management of state resources. There is hope that this investigation will bring clarity and enhance the integrity of future projects, reinforcing public trust in governmental operations.
Overall, this ongoing investigation will be critical in determining the effectiveness and legitimacy of past expenditures, paving the way for improved governance in Fiji’s digital infrastructure.
