The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has announced the formation of a dedicated taskforce to probe the results of an audit concerning Walesi. This action follows the receipt of the audit report from Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications.

During a parliamentary session, it was disclosed that the government allocated a substantial sum of $123.6 million to the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project, providing financial support for the operations of Walesi PTE LTD between 2015 and 2022. FICAC has emphasized that this investigation holds significant national importance.

Commissioner Barbara Malimali has appointed Assistant Manager of Investigation – Economic Crimes Unit, Alifereti Wakanivesi, to lead the taskforce, which has already commenced its work.

This initiative reflects the commitment of the Fijian government to transparency and accountability, aiming to ensure that public funds are managed effectively and ethically. The investigation may foster a renewed sense of public trust in government institutions and processes.

In summary, FICAC has launched an investigation into Walesi following an audit that revealed significant government spending on the DTT Project. The establishment of a special taskforce showcases a proactive approach towards addressing potential corruption and ensuring taxpayers’ money is properly accounted for.
