The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has initiated a thorough auditing and inspection program for ships and shipping companies to ensure adherence to the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014. This process was highlighted in a recent Marine Notice from Acting Chief Executive Officer Iliesa Batisaresare, announcing that the audits are already underway in accordance with Marine Notice 06/2025.
These audits and inspections will cover all eligible ships and their corresponding companies, with the process expected to span approximately six months, or until every eligible entity has been assessed. To support this initiative, MSAF has formally advised the vessels and operators involved to submit their Company Safe Ship Management System (SSMS) manuals and standard operating procedures by March 31, 2026.
Additionally, shipping companies have been reminded of their statutory responsibilities under Section 40 of the Maritime Transport Act 2013 and Regulation 18 of the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014, which set forth critical obligations regarding the safe operation and management of vessels.
Mr. Batisaresare emphasized that MSAF aims to grant full SSMS certifications to vessels and companies that demonstrate compliance after the audit process concludes. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation from industry stakeholders, which is vital for the success of this initiative.
The audit program is a key part of MSAF’s ongoing commitment to enhancing maritime safety standards and ensuring that regulatory compliance is maintained within Fiji’s shipping sector. The Authority’s proactive measures underline the importance of safety in maritime operations, promoting a more secure environment for all stakeholders involved.
