Fiji has taken a significant step forward in scientific exploration and environmental sustainability with the commissioning of its new research vessel, ‘Yau Dikevi,’ in Lami yesterday. This advanced vessel represents a pivotal investment aimed at enhancing oceanic research and the protection of the country’s marine resources.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka presided over the commissioning ceremony, noting that the ‘Yau Dikevi’ is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific survey tools. The Prime Minister described the vessel as a floating laboratory that will serve the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, emphasizing its critical role in various scientific endeavors.

“Although the vessel may not be large, it boasts cutting-edge equipment that will allow our scientists to conduct essential marine geology and coastal surveys. It will facilitate mapping the ocean floor, identifying vulnerable coastal areas, studying tectonic activities, and understanding the underwater processes that shape our environment,” said Rabuka. He added that these initiatives would contribute significantly to global scientific understanding and bolster the nation’s capacity to protect its marine resources for future generations.

Furthermore, the impact of the vessel is expected to extend to regional benefits in certain contexts. This milestone was achieved through collaboration between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly with the involvement of Silverstone Pte Ltd.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their hard work in bringing this vessel to reality. He remarked, “May the research vessel navigate the ocean with purpose, safety, and success, fostering discoveries that will strengthen our commitment to responsible stewardship of our marine environment.”

Following the commissioning, the RV Yau Dikevi set sail on its inaugural journey to Nukulau.

This investment highlights Fiji’s proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and reinforces its commitment to scientific innovation. By enhancing research capabilities, Fiji is not only safeguarding its beautiful marine ecosystems but also contributing to global knowledge, promoting sustainability, and inspiring future generations to prioritize environmental stewardship.
