The Ministry of Local Government has made significant strides in enhancing waste management efforts across Fiji by introducing Return & Earn Fiji centres within municipal councils throughout the country. This innovative initiative provides an opportunity for Fijians to earn money while contributing to a cleaner environment by collecting bottles of various materials and aluminum cans.

Under the program, individuals will receive five cents for each item they drop off at their local municipal council. The councils, in turn, will send these collected items to Return & Earn Fiji, receiving eight cents per item, while the remaining three cents will be allocated towards municipal savings after covering operational costs.

Dwain Qalovaki, a representative from Return & Earn Fiji, reported that eight beverage companies have invested over $800,000 in essential areas such as staff training, processing systems, equipment, and logistics. The organization aims to further invest more than $1 million to ensure the efficient operation of municipal councils under this initiative.

Additionally, Return & Earn Fiji will feature two warehouses located in Suva and Lautoka, specifically designed for crushing and the safe handling of collected materials. Once processed, these materials will be shipped free of charge by Swire Shipping Company Limited to accredited recyclers abroad.

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Naulumisa, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the 2025–2029 National Development Plan, which seeks to deliver environmental benefits, reduce litter and landfill waste, and provide income opportunities for local communities. He emphasized the importance of collective effort, urging families and friends to actively participate in making this program a success. The initiative not only addresses waste management but also fosters community engagement and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a more sustainable future for Fiji.
