The Fiji Labour Party has expressed serious concerns regarding Barbara Malimali’s potential appointment as head of FICAC while she remains under investigation. Mahendra Chaudhry, the party leader and former Prime Minister, emphasized that it would be a grave injustice to allow her to take office in light of the ongoing complaints against her for abuse of office. He called for her to resign as Commissioner of FICAC until an independent and impartial review of the allegations is conducted.
Chaudhry pointed out that Malimali is currently under arrest and being questioned. He also raised issues regarding Attorney General Graham Leung, highlighting their close relationship. He noted that in April 2024, Malimali, in her capacity as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, had recommended Leung for the position of Supervisor of Elections, which he argued further complicates her situation.
He added that Malimali’s appointment would be particularly troubling given her recent role as counsel for Jason Zong, who was charged by FICAC with bribery.
