Jiu-Jitsu Fiji has urgently requested the Fiji Police Force to expedite their investigation following a break-in at their academy in Nadi. The incident, which occurred just days ago, resulted in the theft of multiple training equipment items, notably those belonging to head coach Professor Andre Olivera.

Andrew Griffith, a concerned member of the academy, expressed his anxiety over the situation, especially in light of the academy’s recent achievements and growth. “This is very concerning because this is the second time our academy has been broken into,” Griffith stated. He emphasized the importance of Professor Olivera to their community, saying, “Our biggest worry is that some of the stolen items belong to our head coach. He has been doing a lot for our children and the sport, and we cannot afford to lose him at this stage.”

The academy has reported the break-in to the Namaka Police Station and provided security footage to assist in the investigation. Griffith remains hopeful, stating, “We are hoping for the best and trust that the investigation will be completed soon.” Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that efforts are ongoing. “Investigations into the complaint are still ongoing. The suspect has been identified and is known to the team,” Naisoro informed. However, despite police raids at two locations on Tuesday, nothing was recovered. Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate and arrest the suspect.

This troubling event comes as the sport of jiu-jitsu experiences significant progress both locally and internationally. The Fijian junior jiu-jitsu team recently returned from the New Zealand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu National Championships, where they secured three gold medals and one silver across various age and weight categories. Much of this success has been attributed to the guidance of Professor Olivera, who is recognized globally as a leading instructor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His establishment of the academy in Fiji has enabled local athletes to receive top-tier coaching without needing to travel abroad.

The incident has raised community concerns, but there remains a strong sense of optimism as Jiu-Jitsu Fiji strives to overcome this setback and continue nurturing talent in the sport.
