Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, has emphasized that the National Referendum Bill 2025 is still under review by the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights and has not yet been enacted. His remarks come in response to growing concerns circulating on social media regarding potential infringements on constitutional rights and speculation about hidden agendas tied to the Bill.

Turaga is calling on the public to participate in the legislative process by submitting their views and suggestions to the Committee. He highlighted the importance of public engagement, noting that this process is crucial for developing a law that not only regulates national referendums effectively but also aligns with Fiji’s democratic values and principles.

He described the Committee as the appropriate platform for addressing concerns and contributing to a legislative framework that is well-suited to the context of Fiji. This invitation for public input signifies an encouraging step towards transparency and civic participation in the formation of laws affecting the nation’s governance.
