Tui Nalolo Ratu Kini Vosailagi of Lomawai in Nadroga has strongly urged landowners to take proactive steps in safeguarding their natural resources for the benefit of future generations. This call to action follows the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Vanua o Nalolo and Momi Bay Resorts Limited, a subsidiary of the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF).

The MOU entails the allocation of over $1 million to landowners for the utilization of the qoliqoli, which is vital for the development of the Momi Bay Resort. Ratu Kini embraced this new partnership with the FNPF but emphasized the importance of preserving their natural assets. He asserted that with every new agreement, landowners must prioritize the sustainability of their resources and the well-being of their communities.

Ratu Kini stressed the urgency for vigilant stewardship of their resources, particularly the qoliqoli, to ensure that these invaluable assets remain available to support future generations. His sentiments were echoed by Sitiveni Nawaqa, president of the Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA). Nawaqa shared that the alliance is actively working to return native resources to their rightful landowners and is focused on establishing similar MOUs throughout Fiji’s tourism industry.

“We are looking forward to putting together MOUs for other landowners across Fiji, especially those in the tourism sector,” Nawaqa stated. He outlined an action plan that spans from 2024 to 2030, aiming to create agreements that are equitable and beneficial for both landowners and investors.

Nawaqa acknowledged that while payments for the use of qoliqoli are not currently mandated by law, the initiative aims to foster respectful agreements that honor resource owners. The VITA’s advocacy represents a significant movement towards empowering local communities and ensuring that their natural resources are protected and valued. This positive approach highlights a commitment to both economic development and environmental sustainability in Fiji’s rich cultural landscape.
