The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji has announced a ban on all Ferris wheel operations throughout the country, effective immediately. This decision comes after a 12-seater Ferris wheel was involved in an accident during the Wairiki Sevens tournament held in Taveuni.

Currently, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. The rides had recently undergone inspections on December 7 and 9, 2024, where they were tested to ensure that all components were functioning correctly. The operation certificate was issued on December 9, 2024, prior to the accident.

In light of the situation, the Ministry emphasized the importance of safety and is committed to investigating the incident thoroughly. The NOHSS has already issued a prohibition notice to halt all Ferris wheel operations while the investigation is ongoing. The Honourable Minister, after extensive discussions with senior staff, has made the decision to maintain the ban on these amusement rides until further information is made available.

The Ministry will publish a report detailing the findings of the investigation once it is completed and will provide updates on the situation.

This proactive response to safety concerns reflects a commitment to protecting the well-being of the public. It serves as a reminder of the importance of strict safety protocols in amusement parks and events, ultimately promoting a safer environment for all. Though the current situation may seem troubling, the measures being taken highlight a dedication to enhancing safety standards for amusement rides in Fiji.

Summary: The Fiji government has imposed a nationwide ban on Ferris wheel operations following an accident at the Wairiki Sevens tournament. The National Occupational Health and Safety Services is conducting an investigation, and a report will be issued later. The ban aims to prioritize public safety while thorough evaluations take place.
