The national torch relay, sponsored by Powerade, kicked off today in Levuka, Ovalau, marking the start of an exciting lead-up to the Coca-Cola Games. The official lighting ceremony occurred yesterday at the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji office in Suva, setting the stage for an exhilarating journey for athletes across Fiji.

For the next five weeks, the torch will traverse various regions, culminating in the Fiji Finals from April 24-26 at HFC Bank Stadium. Ryan Mahoney, commercial director at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji, highlighted that the torch relay not only signifies the start of the games but also showcases the commitment and resilience of athletes from diverse backgrounds throughout Fiji. This year notably marks the 50th anniversary of the Coca-Cola Games, celebrating a legacy rich in inspiring narratives from past participants.

Biu Colati, a leader at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA), expressed appreciation for the support from sponsors like Fiji Gas and Digicel, essential for the event’s success. Digicel’s manager, Satish Narain, went on to announce cash sponsorships for exceptional athletes in each grade, providing further motivation for young competitors.

The torch relay will involve 130 students from 50 secondary schools, emphasizing community participation in athletics. Notably, the final leg of the relay will be carried out by the reigning champions, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School, alongside Marist Brothers High School.

This torch relay and the eagerly awaited Coca-Cola Games are more than mere celebrations; they inspire emerging athletes to work hard and achieve greatness in sports. As Fiji gears up to recognize its athletic prowess, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement within schools and communities, promoting unity and a shared purpose throughout the nation.
